16-year-old Athlete Student, Caitlyn Pollock, dies in a fatal car accident

Caitlyn Pollock a 16-year-old student-athlete from Gwinnett County, died in a car accident on Sunday, sparking an outpouring of sadness from people in Metro Atlanta and much of the rest of Georgia who knew, loved, and admired her.

Mill Creek High School in Gwinnett County is in sorrow following the death of one of its students in a weekend vehicle accident. The Mill Creek cheer team announced on Sunday afternoon that one of its junior cheerleaders, Caitlyn Pollock, 16, was killed in the accident the night before.

Kyle McDowell, 21, is the driver who is now facing charges. Pollock was a passenger in McDowell’s car when he failed to navigate the entrance ramp onto State Route 316, striking a concrete barrier, according to Gwinnett County Police. McDowell received minor injuries and was brought to the hospital.

He was accused of driving while intoxicated, failing to maintain a lane, and first-degree vehicular homicide. It was a gloomy day when Channel 2’s Elizabeth Rawlins visited Mill Creek High School on Monday. In order to focus on and remember their classmate, students and teachers observed a moment of quiet.

She questioned, “How can my kid know people in all of these places?” Because Caitlyn was familiar with everyone. How Pollock knew McDowell or where they were heading remains a mystery. Funeral plans are still being decided.
